HUDMIX - STUDY OF ESTUARINE PROCESSES
(August-October 1995) |
Site Map and Bathymetry
Instrumentation (Table 1):
A central mooring was deployed at Site C (see site map). providing vertical profiles of temperature, salinity and conductivity, along with estimates of turbidity using optical backscatter. There was an S4 near the surface which also recorded pressure and velocity; and, a pressure sensor at the bottom-most Seacat. Two other moorings provided near-surface temperature, salinity, conductivity and optical backscatter at Sites E and F.
A Quadrapod (picture) was equipped with 5 BASS velocity sensors, 5 SeaBird conductivity cells, 3 SeaBird temperature sensors, 5 optical backscatter sensors, and one pressure sensor (along with tilt and compass measurements). The BASS quadrapod (graphic) was deployed at Site C (approximately 100 meters east of the central mooring). These data were recorded at 6 Hz for two periods at the beginning and end of the experiment, spanning a neap-spring tidal cycle.
Tripods (approximately 1 meter tall) were deployed at all six sites. Each was equipped with temperature, conductivity and salinity sensors, providing near-bottom observations for both along-channel and cross-channel sections of the river. Pressure gauges were placed on five of the tripods, which provided along-channel pressure gradients throughout the focus region. An OBS was placed on the F-tripod. A tripod was equipped with an ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) and deployed at site C (approximately 120 meters west of the central mooring).
These data were supplemented by a series of shipboard data. Each section included CTD surveys. The transects also included ADCP velocity surveys.
NOS Bathymetry (in 200 meter increments) can be seen proceeding upstream or downstream. (Anotations are upstream coordinates in km from battery. (See bathymetry contour.)
The hourly averaged data are available as matlab files: hudmix.zip. (To unzip use pkunzip on PCs). Contact J.J.Fredericks with questions or to obtain other data sets.
Technical documentation for these data are available as Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Technical Report 98-17. HUDMIX was supported by the Ocean Sciences Division of the National Science Foundation under NSF Grant OCE 94-15617 and the Hudson River Foundation, Grant 002/94P.
