Holiday Party 2012

For the past 10 years, The Biology Department at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has held an auction of pies made by department staff, as part of their annual Holiday party celebration.  The proceeds of the auctions, together with proceeds from a raffle of gingerbread houses (see link) made by Chip Clancy, and decorated by her sister-in-law Sue Clancy, are donated to the Falmouth Service Center.   The amount raised in this year’s pie auction brought the total raised over the 10 years to more than $20,000.   Pictured (see link) are Karen Ji, whose winning bid on a fruit tart put the total over $20,000, and WHOI Senior Scientist John Stegeman, who is the auctioneer for the event.  Karen is the daughter of Jianjun Wang and Rubao Ji of the Biology Department.  This year, the auction of just 20 pies netted $2,010.  There was spirited bidding, including by Director Susan Avery.  The highest price paid for a pie was $225, for a pear frangipane tart made by Judy Kleindinst and purchased by Andrea Thorrold.  The total donated to the Service Center over the past 10 years now stands at $21,657.
