On Friday, September 23, an Alumni/ae
Association breakfast and business meeting was held for all Joint
Program
Alumni/ae. Outgoing association president Jamie Austin was
thanked for his years of leadership, and new president Paul Snelgrove
was welcomed. A Symposium on Oceans and Education followed the
association meeting.
The symposium began with a brief history of
WHOI academic programs (Postdoctoral, Joint Program, Geophysical Fluid
Dynamics, Summer Student Fellow, Minority Fellow, Guest Student and
K-12). A series of short presentations were given by MIT/WHOI Joint Program
alumni/ae engaged in various aspects of education from formal to informal,
grades K through undergraduate. The presentations were followed by a discussion
of past, present, and future challenges for education activities at Woods Hole
Oceanographic Institution.
A barbecue to celebrate John Farrington's 15 years as
Vice President for Academic Programs and Dean followed the symposium.
