 | On October 12, 2007, the Board of Trustees of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) announced that Susan K. Avery, PhD, has accepted the position of president and director of the institution. Avery will be the ninth director in WHOI's 77-year history, and the first woman to hold the position.
Avery is an atmospheric physicist with extensive experience as a leader within scientific institutions. She comes to WHOI from the University of Colorado at Boulder and the Cooperative
Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES). From
1994-2004, Avery served as director of CIRES, the first woman and
first engineer to hold that position.

on October 17. She will officially assume the office early in 2008, succeeding James R. Luyten, PhD, who has served as Acting President and Director since June 2006, and Robert B. Gagosian, PhD, who served from 1993-2006.
