The FT-MS Facility of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution was established in October 2007 with funding from the National Science Foundation, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, and the WHOI Director of Research. The facility houses three major instruments. Each instrument is equipped with liquid chromatography systems (HPLC or UPLC), enabling LC-MS method development:

1) Hybrid linear ion trap Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer (LTQ FT-ICR MS)

2) Triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (TSQ-MS)

3) Linear ion trap mass spectrometer (LTQ MS)

The WHOI FT-MS facility is unique in its ability to support scientists in marine and terrestrial biogeochemistry and atmospheric chemistry.  Research in aquatic biogeosciences is challenging due to the physical complexity of the aqueous environment and the heterogeneity of microbial assemblages on both spatial and temporal scales.  Atmospheric organic matter is also extremely complex, due to dynamic chemical transformations of aerosol organic compounds.

The FT-MS facility offers instrumentation and services that can characterize such environmental mixtures on a molecular scale: 1) ultrahigh resolution and high mass accuracy over a wide range of molecular weights (FT-ICR MS); 2) versatile ionization modes for a broad chemical nature of samples; 3) multiple fragmentation options that are crucial to structural elucidation using tandem MS; 4) liquid chromatography techniques for enhanced analyte resolution; and 5) LC-MS/MS options for trace quantitative analysis. The facility staff are also available to assist with method development and data analysis.

The FT-MS facility welcomes WHOI internal users as well as all outside scientists for sample analysis.
