The HROV will operate in two modes; as an autonomous, or free-swimming, vehicle for wide area surveys (left) and as a tethered, or cabled, vehicle for sampling and other tasks. Transformation will take place on the ship's deck, and in each of the two modes the HROV will spend up to 36 hours doing work to better understand the deepest areas of the oceans.
