Welcome to the Lawson Lab
Our research program focuses on the interplay of physical and biological factors in determining variability in the distribution and movements of pelagic organisms, ranging from zooplankton to fish. Our broad goal is to understand marine ecosystem dynamics and the linkages between particular key study species and their prey, predators, and environment. The overall context for this research lies in understanding the impacts on marine systems of fisheries and climate change, especially ocean acidification. An important component of the work is the development and application of new technologies to address these topics, and acoustic techniques in particular. As such, our research is highly inter-disciplinary, centered in pelagic ecology, but with strong linkages to physical oceanography, applied ocean physics, and marine engineering.
