The Geologic and Climatic Evolution
of the Arabian Sea Region

Data sets required to achieve the stated science goals

1) High resolution drilling of the Oman, Somalian and Indian margins in areas where sedimentation exceeds 20 cm/ky.

2) Deep seismic imaging and dating of the stratigraphy in the Gulf of Oman.

3) Deep drilling and seismic characterization of the proximal Indus Fan.

4) Coastal mapping and GIS monitoring of the Makran margin together with the Pakistan and Iranian Geological Surveys, exploitation of existing data sets held by the GSI.

5) Marine geophysical surveys of the Makran margin and drilling of appropriate sections.

6) Construction of the regional radiocarbon time scale through team approach and the coordination of a detailed AMS dating campaign.

7) Geochemical mapping of the Arabian and Thar desert sediments.

8) Seismic characterization, sampling by dredging or drilling, and dating of the Murray Ridge, Little Murray Ridge and Laxmi Ridge.

9) Documentation of seismicity across the Sonne Fault and the nature of the Ormara Plate.

10) Extension of a high resolution palaeoceanographic record to ages greater than than availbale through the GISP. Concentrated effort on a small number of cores at high resolution.

11) Detailed sediment provenance dataset to allow high resolution reconstruction of regional erosional patterns.
