Blogging in an extreme environment

In winter 2007, Hugh Powell, a freelance science writer, filed daily dispatches from Ross Island, Antarctica, on Expedition 3 of WHOI's Live from the Poles. Expedition members camped out in tents, with three teams of scientists studying two very different subjects: First, they looked at the biology of the frigid, bountiful Ross Sea through the eyes of Adélie penguins. Then they tackled the geology of 300,000-year-old lava flows high on Mount Morning, a dormant volcano in the towering Royal Society Mountains. They worked round the clock thanks to the 24 hours of daylight and enjoyed temperatures that might even get above freezing. (Photo by Chris Linder, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
