Krill collecting net deployed from R/V Connecticut

Over it Goes!

The massive metal frame connected to long collecting nets isn’t easy to handle. Here, WHOI summer student Jon Fincke (right) and University of Connecticut grad student Paola Batta-Lona take the lines to help guide the MOCNESS computer-controlled net system over the stern of R/V Connecticut in July 2010. WHOI biologists Gareth Lawson and Peter Wiebe led the cruise in the Atlantic to investigate physical factors leading to krill aggregations in canyons at the edge of the continental shelf and the importance of these aggregations to the marine food web.
