In addition to coordinating all the research efforts, the expedition’s Chief Scientist Rich Camilli will use underwater mass spectrometers called TETHYS to investigate underwater hydrocarbon plumes. Developed by Camilli, TETHYS is capable of identifying minute quantities of petroleum and other chemical compounds in seawater instantly.
