A nonprofit group promoting the historical, scientific, educational and other statutory purposes of the Cape Cod National Seashore for which no government, donated, nor other funds are available. The group publicizes critical issues affecting the enhancement, protection, or preservation of the Seashore's resources. In addition to administering the Nickerson Fund which grants aid for coastal research projects, they assist in providing interpretive programs for visitors to the National Seashore, and encourage private donations to support seashore programs. The Friends of Cape Cod National Seashore have approximately 500 members.

PUBLICATIONS: Newsletter (3/year, free to members).

FEES: Annual membership is $20 for an individual and $35 for a family.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS: The Friends sponsor erosion control plantings, an adopt-a-trail program for maintenance of key seashore trails, summer entertainment for visitors, support of seashore programs for local schools, and the purchase of new facilities such as picnic tables and grills. Our new project is funding the acquisition of furnishings and exhibits for the Old Harbor Life Saving Station at Race Point.

The Wellfleet Bay Sanctuary is one of 43 sanctuaries owned and managed by the Massachusetts Audubon Society. It is over 1,100 acres of salt marsh, pine woods, fields, brooks, ponds, and moors, including 5 miles of trails. Nature tours, classes, and programs are offered on and off site for students of all ages. Sanctuary staff provide programs related to natural history including slide presentations, guided walks, and participatory research projects. Day camp and daily programs for children during July and August. The sanctuary directs sea turtle stranding recoveries. Open year-round.

PUBLICATIONS: "Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary" (4/year); "Sanctuary Magazine" (3/year); "Connections" (3/year). All publications free to members.

OTHER INFORMATION: Admission to Sanctuary: Members free, $5 non-members, $3 children and seniors. Annual family membership is $50.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS: Provides nature classes for adults and children, field school for adults, interpretive walks, teacher workshops, Wellfleet Harbor marine life cruises, tours of Cape Cod National Seashore and Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge, seal cruises, and canoe and kayak trips. Workshops, slide lectures, outreach, tours, speakers bureau, internships, school field trips and in-class lessons, day camp, and high school overnight camp.

A private, nonprofit land trust, since 1984, accepting land donations and gifts to preserve open space land in the Town of Wellfleet. The Trust owns and maintains 300 acres of conservation land and is a member of The Compact of Cape Cod Conservation Trusts, Inc. The Wellfleet Conservation Trust has 15 Trustees. They currently maintain 19 Conservation Restrictions in Wellfleet. The trust checks Areas of Critical Environmental Concern, protecting Wellfleet Harbor and estuarines from Eastham line to Pamet in Truro.

PUBLICATIONS: Semi-annual newsletter; occasional educational publications produced under guidance of The Compact of Cape Cod Conservation Trusts, Inc.

FEES: Membership by donation, land and/or money.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS: Bi-monthly meeting fourth Monday of alternate months. Maintain bi-annual meetings (programs) which stress coastal resources; wildlife habitats; water resources; maintenance of ponds; efforts to reduce pollution in coastal waters, particularly those comprising important fishing grounds.

The conservation commission is made up of three to seven appointed volunteers to acquire open space, administer and enforce the Massachusetts Wetland Protection Act, administer local protection bylaws, manage open space land, develop open space plans, initiate other conservation programs, advise town agencies on resource protection, participate in agriculture preservation and educate local citizens.

The Board of Health enforces the Massachusetts General Laws, the state Sanitary Code, the state Environmental Code, and local health regulations. This includes, but is not limited to, the location, construction and repair of septic systems, hazardous material storage and disposal, solid waste disposal, bathing water quality, private water supplies, private wells, and non- community public water supplies. The board regulates the use of pesticides/herbicides.

Designated to handle all open space and land bank business for the Town, the Open Space Committee has responsibility for a continuing comprehensive survey of potential conservation and open space land for the purpose of future acquisition, for evaluating town-owned land holdings for use or sale, and makes recommendations for town meeting action to the Board of Selectmen. Holds regular monthly meetings and such special meetings as required. An "Open Space Plan" is available.

The Shellfish Department oversees the management, propagation, and protection of the public and private (aquaculture) shellfisheries in the town. Permit fees vary according to category (commercial vs. non-commercial, resident vs. non-resident). Staff are active in the County Shellfish Advisory Committee and the Massachusetts Shellfish Officers Association.
