A private, nonprofit land trust accepting land donations and gifts to preserve various types of wetlands and open space areas of historical, scientific, or geological significance in the Town of Eastham. Owns and maintains 200 acres of conservation land and holds conservation easements on several other parcels. A member of The Compact of Cape Cod Conservation Trusts, Inc.

A citizens group working to preserve and enhance the quality of life in our community through research, education, information, outreach, and positive action. Advocates broader cooperation and communication with Cape-wide groups focused on regional quality of life issues and protection of the Cape Cod environment.

PUBLICATIONS: "Forum Notes" (quarterly, free with membership). Periodic "Action Alerts" on issues of vital concern to members.

FEES: Annual membership: $10 Family. The Forum has over 500 members.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS: The Forum actively participates in town affairs. They stress informed input and voting on vital questions affecting the future direction of Eastham. The Forum holds public meetings before town elections, Town Meeting, and, when pertinent, on local issues. In addition, in 1999-2000 the Forum sponsored two public meetings at which Eastham's Recycling Committee presented the concept/program "Pay by the Bag" for solid waste disposal, which has been successful in many communities, resulting in more recycling, thereby containing the expected rise in disposal costs. The Forum organized the annual bayside beach cleanups and Coastsweep; maintained 15 flower islands and Town Hall's garden; sponsored a Forum Water Tent at Windmill Weekend which combined "groundwater awareness" activities with Water Resources Advisory Committee water testing and information; monitored town boards; promoted undergrounding of utility wires in the vicinity of Windmill Green, affordable housing, and measures and tools to plan for expected increases in development, water use, and traffic.

A group of Eastham citizens formed the Nauset Light Preservation Society, a non-profit volunteer organization whose original mission was to rescue the lighthouse from the edge of a sixty-foot high eroding cliff. The tower was moved in 1996 to a new location approximately 300 feet west and was restored. The group's mission now is the continued restoration and preservation of the lighthouse and oil house.

PUBLICATIONS: Newsletter. Video: "Rescued: The Story of the Nauset Light."

FEES: Membership fees: $10, individual; $20, family; $75, benefactor; and $1,000, lifesaver. Donations also accepted.

The conservation commission is made up of seven appointed volunteers to acquire open space, administer and enforce the Massachusetts Wetland Protection Act, administer local protection bylaws, manage open space land, develop open space plans, initiate other conservation programs, advise town agencies on resource protection, participate in agriculture preservation and educate local citizens.

The Department of Natural Resources enforces the rules and regulations of shellfishing, boating, and Wetlands Protection Acts in the town. The Department deals with marshland, docks, illegal dumping, driving of recreational vehicles, parking and driving on the beach, wildlife management programs, open space lands management (trails), motorboats on ponds, and water quality assessment. The Department also runs a shellfish propagation/nursery and hatchery program. Flyers and handouts regarding shellfishing and wetlands protection are available. Shellfishing licenses are available.

The Board of Health enforces the Massachusetts General Laws, the state Sanitary Code, the state Environmental Code, and local health regulations. This includes, but is not limited to, the location, construction and repair of septic systems, hazardous material storage and disposal, solid waste disposal, bathing water quality, private water supplies, private wells, and non- community public water supplies. The board regulates the use of pesticides/herbicides.
