Marine biotechnology is a promising field of research and commercial development. The development of molecular biological approaches to address ecological processes is one application that may be particularly relevant to our expanded understanding of coastal ecosystems. Molecular probes developed to elucidate cellular mechanisms of toxicant exposure provide sensitive biomarkers of organism response and adaptations to environmental perturbations. The projects in this theme area demonstrate the development of innovative tools for addressing marine ecological problems.
