Job Summary:
Reporting to the Marine Operations Coordinator, assists with ship scheduling activities and acts as liaison and point of contact with scientific users of ships and deep submergence vehicles. Assists scientists with pre, current and post cruise logistics including reconciling port invoices. Prepares U.S. Customs documentation for WHOI vessels. Assists scientists in planning and preparing for the scientific work to be conducted on Institution vessels and facilities.



Major Duties:
  • Assist with planning, coordination, and logistics of cruises onboard WHOI vessels.
  • Prepare cruise information documents, carry out meetings with science users, track and communicate requirements to WHOI support staff.
  • Assist scientist with integration, operation, location, deployment, and recovery of equipment in accordance with requirements and regulations.
  • Oversee scheduling of coastal vessel and assist with scheduling of ocean going vessels
  • Maintain schedule of coastal vessel and manage frequent changes.
  • Interact with foreign governments and ships agents worldwide.
  • Update and maintain cruise planning web pages.
  • Keep records on ship use, cruise tracks, and transits.
  • Inform and assist scientists with use and handling of hazardous and radioactive materials.
  • Assist with scheduling of WHOI docks and dock facilities.
  • Assist with tours and public outreach events.
  • As needed participate in oceanographic research cruises.
  • Performs related duties as deemed appropriate and necessary.


Desired Education/Experience for Hiring

Degree in Science or Engineering or equivalent experience required, Experience in research ship operations; understanding of oceanographic research, methodologies, and oceanographic equipment preferred. Experience with computers and databases. Ability to work at times in a fast paced changing environment, multi-task, and work on several projects simultaneously. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with co-workers and scientists. A quick learner with a careful eye and attention to detail to a variety of responsibilities. Enjoys working with others and has strong communication skills both written and verbal.

Seagoing and technician experience a plus. Position may require some after hours and weekend time.



Physical Aspects of Job:

Work may be outside, on-board vessels, and dock facilities in adverse weather conditions.
The ability to occasionally move and or lift 50lbs
The ability to occasionally climb ladders and stairs
