Job Summary Reporting to the
Vice President of Finance & Administration/CFO, the Director of
Human Resources is responsible for providing leadership and direction
in all aspects of Human Resources Management, both at the
organizational and departmental level, with overall responsibility for
the management and development of all services provided by the Human
Resources Office.
The
Director of Human Resources is responsible for the development of
cohesive HR strategies and policies to support the Institution's
mission and goals. Provides advice and support to senior administration
on strategic aspects of HR.
Major Duties
- Leads a team
of HR professionals in a variety of initiatives including the design
and implementation of HR programs, policies, practices and procedures
to ensure the recruitment, development, and retention of a highly
qualified, diverse, and effective workforce.

Sets department priorities and aligns financial and human resources in
ways that provide maximum benefit for the Institution and the WHOI
community. Exercises judicious budgetary authority for departmental
resources.

Develops and implements strategies and activities to strengthen
organizational effectiveness, climate, and employee relations within a
complex, diverse, and dynamic environment.
- Oversees development, implementation, and execution of HR policies and programs.
- In partnership with staff, continuously improves human resources-related programs, services, and systems.
- Develops, implements and manages effective internal employee and management communications.

Manages the operations of the compensation program. Reviews
compensation practices and departmental salary recommendations. Works
with staff to achieve salary equity and to maintain nondiscriminatory
compensation practices. Administers the annual merit increase program
and establishes guidelines in accordance with Institution polices and
procedures.
- Serves as a member of the Institution's senior management group.

Provides expert advice and consultation services to decision makers at
all levels of the organization on issues that have human resources
impact. Provides authoritative expertise in areas of law and policy
related to human resources.

Promotes a positive, productive, and ethical work environment. Promotes
advancement of the Institution and its reputation as an organization
committed to excellence as an educational and research institution and
as an employer.

Serves as a liaison between Human Resources and other Institution
departments/divisions, as well as external organizations and agencies.
- Performs other related duties as necessary.
Desired Education/Experience for Hiring Bachelor's degree
in business administration, human resources management or related area,
or a combination of education and experience from which comparable
knowledge and abilities is acquired. Minimum of 8-10 years of directly
related experience in the direction and administration of a broad range
of human resources activities. Proven success with HR Management
skills, including experience in dispute resolution, facilitation,
organizational development, and program management. Proven ability to
productively network with Institution constituencies and to work
effectively with a broad workforce including scientists, staff, and
students. Ability to provide immediate response to urgent issues,
developing immediate and effective communications, and attending
facilitative and problem solving meetings. Proven clear and effective
written and verbal communication skills required. Demonstrated
effective leadership skills and a philosophy of teamwork required.
Effective supervisory and financial management skills. Proven
analytical skills and experience. Experience in the field of
not-for-profit, research, or higher education desired.
