Job Summary

Primarily reporting to the Benefits Manager, the Human Resources Generalist administers the day-to-day activities of a variety of Human Resources functions and duties including employment and benefit related services and administration.   Provides guidance and assistance on policies, practices, plans, programs, and procedures applicable to Human Resources activities. The incumbent will be expected to have a working knowledge of applicable Human Resources laws and regulations; including but not limited to employment and benefits (e.g. ADA, FMLA, EEO/AA, etc.).  Serves as a knowledgeable resource and provides Human Resources support and customer service to a diverse client base. 



Major Duties
  • Administers health and welfare benefit plans, including enrollments and terminations by processing required documents through third-party providers, HRIS, and payroll assuring accurate record keeping

 

  • Performs employment activities, interviews and evaluates candidates for selected positions and maintains records related to the same

 

  • Assists and may lead new employee orientation along with employee check-ins for new hires.  Through this process, assures employees gain an understanding of benefit plans and enrollment provisions and counsels employees accordingly

 

  • Assures necessary employment and enrollment documentation (e.g. I9, E-verify, etc.) is completed accurately and in a timely fashion in accordance with applicable Human Resources laws, plans, and provisions

 

  • Assists with data integrity of the HRIS system and serves as a source for data entry and updates to the system; assure that systems and processes adequately support the various HR functions and objectives

 

  • Participates in annual administration of specific Human Resources programs by facilitating the smooth information flow and maintenance of applicable utilities within the HRIS systems

 

  • Compiles reports from database for Institution plans and programs in accordance with plan documents and federal and state regulations

 

  • Keeps management advised of potential issues and recommends/implements solutions as appropriate

 

  •  Prepares professional correspondence and documentation for various personnel actions and situations, sometime of a sensitive nature

 

  • Works closely with Human Resources colleagues on department-wide projects as necessary

 

  • Handles and maintains confidential materials

 

  • Builds and maintains teamwork with members of HR and other departments

 

  • Interfaces with employees and managers throughout the ‘employment-cycle’; from check-in (hire) to check-out (termination)

 

  • May serve as support and backup for other HR professionals and/or perform other duties as necessary


Desired Education/Experience for Hiring

Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.  Minimum of three years’ experience as a HR generalist.    Must have strong computer skills and have utilized HRIS systems.  Must be proficient in MS Office applications. Ability to problem solves and provides guidance and support.    Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required.  Must be able to exercise discretion and assure a high level of confidentiality. Attention to detail is critical. Working knowledge and understanding of plan designs and third party record keeping/administration along with Federal and State laws. Ability to work independently and adapt to changing work priorities and handle multiple priorities.  Knowledge of retirement, compensation, foreign national employment, and HRIS programs a plus.   Previous experience in academia, private research, or nonprofit environments as a Human Resources professional a plus.
