Job Summary Reporting
to the President and Director and working closely with the Vice
Presidents, manages the Institution's communications, public relations,
and media relations divisions.
Major Duties
- Develops
a communications strategy and implements operational plans that
enable the Institution to accomplish its mission-based mandate:
-
to make the results of the research known to the public
and policy makers and be world leader in advancing and
communicating a basic understanding of the oceans, and
- to
provide the resources necessary to support research, education,
and communication programs.
- As a
member of the Institution's strategic planning team, works both
to strengthen organizational development, as well as bring solid
strategic thinking about the role and responsibility of all
facets of the communications efforts, in assuring that the institutional
priorities are met. These efforts include publication, public
presentation, media relations, graphics, web-based media, public
information, community relations, and WHOI's exhibit center.
As part of the External Relations team, assures that the institutional
messages are clear and consistent to the public and policy makers.
- Working
with the Director of Development, assures that the marketing
and communications efforts are coordinated and tightly focused
in support of the current fund raising objectives.
- Working
with the Director of Government Relations, assures that the
marketing and communications efforts are appropriate for both
ongoing stewardship with the Agencies and Congress and for specific
institutional priorities.
- Working
with the Ocean Institute Directors, assures that the communications
objectives of the four institutes are carried out both by the
communications and media relations staff and the scientists
within the institutes.
- As manager
of institution communications, assures that all communications
programs and related staffing and budgets are appropriate to
accomplish the stated goals and long-term vision of the Institution
and its leadership.
Job Specifications (Knowledge, skills and abilities normally required for competent performance in the job) Graduate
degree strongly preferred in science writing, journalism or communications.
Science background strongly preferred. Minimum of fifteen years
of progressing experience in management of complex communications/media/public
relations departments. Demonstrated ability to work with senior
management on institutional strategic planning and organizational
change. Marketing experience required. Demonstrated ability to
manage web-based programs. Must possess a high degree of organization,
ability to solve problems, and excellent communication skills.
Strong interpersonal and management skills are required. As a
senior representative of the Institution, the incumbent must have
the ability to synthesize and translate science for the public
and policy makers.
