Job Summary
Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Managing Editor is responsible for setting and evolving the editorial direction of both the printed and online versions of Oceanus magazine, developing story and visual and interactive ideas, overseeing marketing of the magazine, writing and editing submissions, setting and overseeing the editorial schedule, managing the budget, and developing the skills of the writers.

Major Duties
  • Covers a science beat (departments and Ocean Institutes) to develop stories and visuals.

  • Assigns stories to writers, ensuring a distribution of story types, managing the workload of writers, and keeping them on schedule.

  • Edits stories or distributes editing workload.

  • Selects a subset of online stories for the printed edition.

  • Works with Graphics, overseeing the production of the printed and online editions.

  • Assists a marketing advisor on development of metrics of the success and perception of the magazine.

  • Supervises writers, including mentoring their skills in reporting, writing, editing and development of visuals.

  • Works with the Department Administrator, managing the magazine budget.

  • Writes and annually updates strategic plan for Oceanus.

  • Provides editorial support for other communications projects as needed.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Desired Education/Experience for Hiring
Master's degree required, preferably in writing, journalism, or communications plus 8 or more year's experience with 2 years being in a management role; minimum of fours years as a PIO, reporter, or editor in a media organization. Background in science or experience working with scientists strongly preferred. Work experience in a nonprofit or academic environment a plus. Must possess excellent communication and management skills; ability to quickly prioritize sometimes competing demands; work with minimal direction and deal efficiently with shifting priorities. Must be able to work smoothly in a diverse team, where lines of authority may shift with workload or assignment, and where decisions often need to be made with incomplete information. Must be able to perform with a high degree of organization, initiative and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines. Must have the ability to motivate people in a time of transition and with an evolving product.
