Job Summary
Reporting to the Director of Communications and working closely with other members of an editorial team, responsible for editorial projects drawing on a broad range of skills in reporting, writing, editing and project management.

Major Duties
  • Functions as "swing reporter," taking on a broad range of writing and editing assignments covering long-, medium- and short-forms, for print and for the web. This includes writing and editing:

    • Oceanus articles (long form)
    • Currents articles (medium form)
    • www.whoi.edu (web form)
    • Press releases and media information packets
    • WHOI annual report and donor report
    • Exhibit center narratives
    • Video editing
    • Brochures
    • Various internal communications vehicles

  • Works with Graphic Services, publication designers, authors, and subjects of articles to conceive and oversee execution of illustrations.

  • Performs other duties as assigned


Job Specifications (Knowledge, skills and abilities normally required for competent performance in the job)
Masters degree in writing, communications or journalism plus extensive and broad science writing and editing experience. The ideal candidate is a renaissance journalist, having at least 8 years experience. Maintains high quality reporting, writing and editing standards while working to deadline. Highly collaborative, yet also a self-starter. Must be able to manage rapidly shifting priorities and potentially competing demands for time. Resourceful in developing new editorial concepts that support the objective of advancing ocean sciences. Scientific literacy and demonstrated ability to engage the intelligent reader in complex subjects without compromising accuracy. Willingness to take intelligent risks. Adept at giving and receiving constructive criticism.
