Job Summary
Reporting to the Board of Trustees, acts as the chief executive officer of the Institution and is generally responsible for all scientific, fiscal and operating activities of the Institution. Develops and maintains effective relationships at the highest levels within the Federal funding agencies, as well as with the Legislative and Executive Branches of the Federal government. The President is also responsible for fundraising activities in the private sector and represents the Institution nationally and internationally.

Major Duties

•  Acts as the chief executive officer of the Corporation.

•  Assures the execution of all contracts and agreements on behalf of the Corporation which are either authorized generally, or authorized by specific votes of the Board of Trustees or its Executive Committee.

•  Assures the execution of orders and votes of the Board of Trustees and of its Executive Committee and the general operative purposes of the Corporation.

•  Submits a report of activities at annual meetings and as requested.

•  Approves budgets for proposed operations of the Institution.

•  Participates as ex officio member of the Board of Trustees.

•  Approves appointments to technical and scientific staff at the tenured levels.

Trustees and Members of the Corporation Relations:

•  Meets regularly with the Executive Committee to discuss personnel actions, major budgetary requirements and Institution plans for approval.

•  Participates in meetings of the Campaign, Nominating, Budget and Finance, Audit and other Trustee Committees.

•  Reports at meetings of the Trustees and the Corporation.

Organization and Management of the Institution:

•  Appoints members of the Directorate.

•  Approves the management structure and allocation of duties at the Institution.

•  Has final approval of major capital expenditures.

  Congressional Liaison:

•  Through visits to Washington, DC, arranges visits of Congressional members and staff to the Institution.

•  Works with appropriate members of Institution staff to develop contacts for WHOI.

•  Works with outside groups to increase support of oceanography in general.



Desired Education/Experience for Hiring
Ph.D. in a physical or life science discipline related to oceanography. Significant, demonstrably successful experience, accomplishment and impact in ocean sciences research to attain the rank of or comparable to Senior Scientist. Proven skills in leadership, management, and interpersonal communications.
