Ocean Instruments Web Site
Background
In collaboration with NOAA's Cooperative Institute for Climate and
Ocean Research located at WHOI, COSMOS is now the home of the Ocean
Instruments web site developed with funding from the Arthur
Vining Davis Foundations. The web site is an informative educational and outreach tool that highlights the instrument
and platform technologies currently used in oceanography.
The site, developed by WHOI to enhance undergraduate education efforts in the ocean sciences, features text, images, diagrams
and background
information about ocean sampling, instrumentation and
platforms. After advisory meetings with undergraduate professors
the site was formed with the input from scientists and engineers, and
tested with
students, potential users and potential contributors. Although it
was designed with undergraduates in mind, it can be used by the general
public, policy makers and journalists. The site
provides
links to glossaries and multimedia technologies including video
streaming, audio packages, and searchable databases.
