Polar Bear Populations in the Southern Beaufort Sea: Conservation, Climate Change, and Public Policy
Arctic Research Initiative
2008 Funded Project
This proposal requests support for a study of the demography and population viability of polar bears (Ursus maritimus) in relation to changes in Arctic sea ice. It will use data on the southern Beaufort Sea population, but will have implications for a much larger part of the Arctic basin (the Divergent Ice Ecoregion; Amstrup et al. 2007), estimated to contain about 1/3 of the world's polar bears.
