WHOI Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 Community Storage Server
WHOI CMIP5 Community Storage Server was installed in the summer of 2013 with generous support from the Ocean Climate Change Institute and WHOI's Director of Research to host the climate model simulations from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5).
CMIP5 simulations was prepared for the 5th Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC AR5) by the climate modeling centers around the globe based on common protocols. While the CMIP5 simulations are freely available and becoming increasingly useful tools for the climate science community, the large number and size of the various simulations makes it extremely inefficient for individual researchers to download and store them, leading to redundancy across many other Institutional resources.
The WHOI CMIP5 Community Storage Server provides a more cost/time-effective way of making this valuable community asset available to all WHOI researchers by hosting the subset of the CMIP5 simulations that would be most commonly used by the WHOI researchers.
As of October 2013, various past, present, and future climate model simulations with a total size of ~50 terabytes prepared by 24 climate modeling centers around the world are downloaded to the server for the use of any WHOI researcher. An internal webpage, http://cmip5.whoi.edu/, provides further description about the server and access to the downloaded simulations.
