R/V Atlantis Shipboard Computing: Computers
The Atlantis has a sophisticated computer network with multiple general purpose science use computers available. All our computers are networked using 10baseT or 100baseT ethernet, and we employ standard internet protocols (TCP/IP). The core servers are two Pentium III 800MHz PCs running Linux (Red Hat Distribution - Version 6.2). One of these servers (named linus) acts as the primary email and file server. The other (named ftp) hosts the ships web and ftp server (serving only the shipboard network.
Most of our computers are concentrated in the Computer Lab (port side, Main Deck, amidships). All our machines have names to make it easy to specify exactly which computer is being referenced. Most of the Unix machines are named after characters from the Peanuts comic strip. The Macs are named after metals. The Windows computers are usually named for the function they perform, their location, or for somebody or something in Alvin’s history.
The chart below lists the major computer resources on the Atlantis. The “Terminal” column indicates whether that computer is available for Science to use as a general purpose terminal.
