Establishing World-Class Coral Reef Ecosystem Monitoring in Okinawa

WHOI researchers, working in partnership with the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University, have developed the Ocean Cube Observatory System, a marine observatory system installed in waters off Motobu Peninsula, Japan -- a biodiversity hotspot that is home to ecologically significant coral reefs. The system enables real-time monitoring of temperature, salinity, and other chemical, biological and physical data.

WHOI Receives $8.1 Million Grant to Construct New Laboratory

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) will receive $8.1 million from the U.S. Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to construct the Laboratory for Ocean Sensors and Observing Systems. The WHOI award is one of only 12 proposals of 167 submissions that were funded as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grants to support the construction of new scientific research facilities.

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Will Lead Coastal and Global Observatories Effort

A Cooperative Agreement signed by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Consortium for Ocean Leadership (OL) gives Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and its partners approval to begin construction on ocean observing infrastructure at coastal sites offshore of southern New England, Oregon, and Washington, and at high latitude open-ocean sites in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Southern Oceans. The observatories will be built and installed over the next five years.

New Robot Sub Surveys the Deep off the Pacific Northwest

Scientists and engineers from WHOI and the University of Washington have successfully completed the first scientific mission with Sentry, a newly developed robot capable of diving as deep as 5,000 meters into the ocean. The vehicle surveyed and helped pinpoint several proposed deep-water sites for seafloor instruments that will be deployed in the Ocean Observatories Initiative.
