Biology of gelatinous zooplankton
Research in the labs of Larry Madin and Richard Harbison centers on the distribution, ecology and energetics of several groups of gelatinous zooplankton, including cnidarians, ctenophores and pelagic tunicates. Current interests include the role of gelatinous predators, feeding, energetics and population dynamics of salps, and the natural history of the deep-sea gelatinous fauna.
Consequences of nonlinear dynamics
Studies in Hal Caswell's laboratory address the consequences of nonlinear dynamics in planktonic food webs. Recent studies have addressed the effects of life history structure on the dynamics of resource-consumer interactions, the effect of closure terms on chaos in planktonic food webs, the possibilities for spatial pattern resulting from food web coupling by diffusion, and new ways to characterize the response of food webs to perturbations.
