1. An Expendable CTD (or XCTD) is a reasonably inexpensive single use probe that obtains temperature and conductivity profiles down to about 1000 m, sending the data up a thin copper wire before breaking. Here Kohei Mizubata lauches one while the ship continues to cruise.
