red tide cyst
A sample under fluorescent light that has been stained to enable accurate identification of Alexandrium cysts amongst sediment or other organic matter. The photo was taken at 200x magnification. The stain is useful but is not species specific. Positive counts are still made based on the morphology of the cyst. (Photo by Kerry Norton, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
