Ice-Tethered Profiler An autonomous instrument for sustained observation of the Arctic Ocean
The ITP uses a small traction drive wheel (visible near the midpoint of the cylindrical body) to move up and down the wire. Spring-mounted guide sheaves at the top and bottom of the vehicle hold the wire rope tether against the drive wheel. The CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth) sensor is mounted on the top endcap.
