Policy Information

I. General
A. The Institution provides Business Travel Accident coverage for all employees while traveling on Institution business, Guest Divers who are properly certified and all other Guests while on a trip at the direction and expense of the Institution, and Senior Scientists who are retired and/or on the Supplemental Retirement Plan and who are traveling on behalf of the Institution. This insurance is paid entirely by the Institution.

B. This insurance covers the eligible individual when business travel is authorized or at the direction of the Institution, and requires the insured to be away from the premises to which s/he is regularly assigned. In addition to coverage while traveling by a traditional means (e.g. automobile, bus, train, commercial airline), coverage also includes travel on water conveyances as a pilot, passenger, crew member or member of a scientific party as well as travel as a pilot, passenger, crew member or observer in any aircraft owned, operated or leased by the Institution.

C. A business trip begins when the insured leaves her/his residence or place of regular employment (whichever occurs last), and continues until the insured returns to her/his residence or place of regular employment (whichever occurs first). Everyday travel between an insured's residence and place of regular employment or while on vacation or personal business is not covered.

II. Coverage
A. All active employees are covered at three times the insured's Annual Base Salary rounded to the next higher $1,000 if not already at a multiple thereof. The minimum benefit is $50,000; the maximum benefit is $500,000.

B. Guest Divers who are properly certified and all other Guests while on a trip at the direction of the Institution are covered for $50,000.

C. Senior Scientists who are retired and/or on the Supplemental Retirement Plan, and who are traveling on behalf of the Institution, are covered for $250,000.

III. Benefits 
A. Death and Dismemberment - Each insured is covered for loss of life or bodily member. A "member" is defined as a hand, foot, eye, or one's speech or hearing. The loss must be as the result of a covered accident.

B. The Principal Sum applicable to an insured shall be based on the following percentages:

 Age at Loss Rate of Principal Sum
Less than age 75 100%
Age 75 but less than 80 50%
Age 80 or more 25%

C. Permanent Total Disability - Only active employees under age 70 are covered in the event of an injury which results in Permanent Total Disability. "Permanent Total Disability" is defined as the inability to engage in any substantial gainful occupation or employment for the remainder of the insured's lifetime. This benefit is payable to an insured who, within 180 days of a covered injury, is totally Disabled, whose Disability is continuous for one full year, and at the end of that year is Permanently Totally Disabled.

D. If a benefit is payable for more than one hazard, only the largest benefit payable as a result of a covered accident will be paid.

IV. Exclusions

Coverage is not provided for any loss resulting from:

A. Illness or disease except bacterial infection arising out of an accidental cut or wound;

B. Committing or attempting to commit a felony or act of violence or participation in civil disobedience, civil disorder, riot or insurrection;

C. Suicide or self-inflicted injury whether sane or insane;

D. An accident occurring while serving in any military or other organized armed forces;

E. Travel or flight in any vehicle or device beyond the earth's atmosphere; in a rocket-propelled aircraft; in a craft being used for crop dusting, seeding, spraying, firefighting, pipe or power line inspection, hunting or banner towing; flying that requires a special permit or waiver from an authority having jurisdiction over civil aviation; acrobatic or stunt flying; or in any aircraft while giving or receiving any training or instruction.
