Overview and Year in Review
A presentation was made to provide and overview of the Diversity Committee, its charge, its activities, and its upcoming election
The primary charge of the WHOI Diversity Committee is to aid the Institution in its efforts to recruit, retain and mentor a diverse community of employees, students and postdoctoral researchers. Diversity is defined here as any race, ethnicity, religion, creed, gender, age, national origin, citizenship status, sexual orientation, physical or mental ability, socio-economic status, or veteran status, which is underrepresented in science.
Past activities included:
- The Secret of Photo 51 (March 2008) - women in science
- The Elephant Man (June 2008) - disability issues
- Europa, Europa (October 2008) - religious persecution in World War II
We will have seven continuing members and six new members will be elected.
We will accept self-nomination via an online form at http://www.whoi.edu/diversity (internal access only). We particularly are seeking representation from a diverse group of individuals; staff from AOPE, Biology and MPC; staff members of the Directorate and Academic Programs; and a Joint Program Student. All interested individuals should apply via the online form. Your statement on why you would like to join the committee will be printed on the ballots. Nominations will be accepted through November. Voting will take place in January.
