The first sunset of the winter lasted several beautiful hours – for a while a sundog, the coloured patch to the left, was visible. This is also called a parhelion, and is made by light refracting through ice crystals in the air.

The sun is just nearly dipping below the horizon but still sends one strong column of light upwards like a beacon.
The full moon hangs over the icepack in the dusky light.
