Symposia & Forums

Endangered North Atlantic Right Whale Forum

November 6 and 7, 2003
The goals of the Ocean Forum were to assess what we know and need to know about the North Atlantic Right Whale's predicament and to devise collaborative, multi-pronged research strategies to catalyze advances in knowledge and enhance conservation efforts.

Marine Protected Areas

August 27-29, 2001
A Fisheries, Oceanography and Society Symposium
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

Growing concern about declining fisheries, habitat degradation and loss of marine species has led to increased discussion and advocacy of marine protected areas (MPAs) as part of the solution to these environmental, social and economic problems. Like parks, preserves, and wilderness areas on land, marine protected areas can provide populations, species and habitats with varying degrees of protection from exploitation or degradation.

The Symposia on Fisheries, Oceanography and Society are made possible by the generous support of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Kummel.

Deep Sea Fisheries

September 12-14, 2004
A Fisheries, Oceanography and Society Symposium
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and New England Aquarium

This Symposium convened experts on deep-sea species and habitats targeted by emerging fisheries. Topics included ecology and biology of seamounts, canyons and deep-sea fishes, technology and economics of deep-sea fishing, conservation and regulation. Its intended audience was marine biologists, fishery scientists, the fishing and seafood industries, conservation groups, economists and policy makers.
