October 23, 2007 Next of Kin On December 11, 1968, the Deep Submergence Vehicle Sea Cliff (DSV-4) was christened and launched at Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation for the U.S. Navy. The personnel sphere for Sea Cliff was originally milled and fabricated for the Alvin submersible in the mid-1960s, and was later used to build the new sub after Alvin had proven its value to the oceanographic community. In 1998, the Navy gave Sea Cliff to WHOI for possible use in conjunction with Alvin and for engineering purposes. (Photo courtesy of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Archives)
