In order to provide a spatial (horizontal) footprint of the Global nodes, the global design calls for deployment of three, 1000-meter capable gliders at each of the four Global Arrays.
The Global gliders will include instruments to measure salinity, temperature, depth, dissolved oxygen, fluorescence, chlorophyll-a, and optical backscatter.
The gliders will be used in conjunction with the central and the flanking mesoscale moorings at each global location. Equiped with an acoustic modem. They will communicate acoustically with moorings when they come within 5 km of them and this would be used routinely with the gliders operating within/between the triangle of moorings.
