Global Gliders

In order to provide a spatial (horizontal) footprint of the Global nodes, the global design calls for deployment of five, 1000-meter capable gliders at each of the four Global Arrays.  The Global gliders include instruments to measure salinity, temperature, depth, dissolved oxygen, fluorescence, chlorophyll-a, and optical backscatter.

Three of the five gliders are "patrol gliders" that serve two roles,  first, they encircle the Global Array continuously capturing measurements using their onboard sensor suite, and second, they download measurements from the three subsurface moorings acoustically, and relay these measurements back to shore when the glider surfaces.

Two of the five deployed gliders are "Profiling gliders," acting as "virtual moorings," capturing continuous measurements in the upper 200 meters of water within close range of the hybrid profiler mooring.
