Oceanographers Amid the Flames
In the din and heat of crews burning off recovered petroleum nearby, WHOI researchers Rich Camilli (dark shirt) and Sean Sylva (light shirt) examine the remotely operated vehicle that will carry their isobaric gas-tight sampler to the bottom of the Gulf to try to get a sample of the oil and gas gushing from the Macondo well. One manipulator arm and hand of the ROV can be seen pointing down in the right portion of the frame. This video was shot aboard the Ocean Intervention III on the evening of June 20, 2010, shortly before the ROV and IGT were deployed.
