Tim Shank, a biologist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, collects samples of giant clams retrieved by the Alvin submersible during the 2002 expedition to the Galápagos Rift. Shank returned to the area in 2005 and is back again on a new voyage in July 2011.
