In 1977, WHOI scientists and colleagues were astonished to find lush communities of life thriving without sunlight on chemical-rich fluids venting from the seafloor. The scientists called this site, filled with 6-foot-tall tubeworms, "Garden of Eden." Another site nearby was called "Rose Garden." (Kathleen Crane, NOAA)
