The only light in ocean depths "is the light we bring with us," says
Jonathan Howland, an engineer at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. These arrays of LEDs, or light-emitting diodes, are attached to the hull
of the new deep-diving vehicle Nereus, providing illumination for Nereus's camera system.
