Tagging a whale
TAG TEAM—Researchers succeed in the challenging task of using a 40-foot carbon-fiber pole to attach a revolutionary digital recording tag, or D-tag, to an elusive whale during its brief stay at the surface between dives. The tag attaches with suction and records sounds and whale movements during several dives. It releases automatically after about 12 hours (Photo by Marco Ballardini, BluWest)
