Biology researcher Bruce Keafer prepares the Environmental Sample Processor (ESP) for deployment off the New England coast. The ESP filters seawater to trap cells, analyzes DNA to identify and count them, and sends the information to scientists ashore. Keafer manages the ESP lab and its move to WHOI's new buildingand will soon deploy several more ESPs, with the goal of providing early warning of harmful "red tide" algae.
