Artist Cornelia Kavanagh visited WHOI biologist Gareth Lawson’s lab in November 2011 to show him some of the pteropod sculptures on which she was working. Lawson studies pteropods, important zooplankton in the marine food web, whose shells are vulnerable to ocean acidification. Kavanagh's sculptures represent how she envisages they may be affected by ocean acidification. Her exhibit, "The Pteropod Project: Charismatic Microfauna," opens in New York on May 22.
