WHOI microbiologist Andreas Teske helped identify a previously unknown giant bacterium discovered in seafloor sediments off the coast of Nambia. Growing in long lines of single cells, each stuffed with reflective white globules of sulfur, the bacteria resembled a string of pearls to its discovers, who named it Thiomargarita namibiensis, "Sulfur pearl of Nambia."
