WHOI chemist Ben Van Mooy holds a sample of water taken from the plume of hydrocarbons more than 1,000 meters below the surface of the Gulf of Mexico. He has prepared the sample for the Winkler titration, a method that determines the concentration of oxygen dissolved in the water.
