The Autonomous Benthic Explorer, nicknamed ABE, was lost at sea on March 5, 2010, on its 222nd research dive. ABE helped to herald a new kind of deep-submergence vehicle—the autonomous underwater vehicle, or AUV, a free-swimming robot that was unmanned and untethered to surface ships.
