Hydrothermal Circulation
Seawater percolates through permeable seafloor crust, beginning a complex circulation process. The seawater undergoes a series of chemical reactions with subsurface rocks at various temperatures and eventually changes into hydrothermal fluids that vent at the seafloor. (Illustration by E.
