South Florida Ocean Measurement Center (SFOMC)
South Florida Ocean Measurement Center

This new facility was founded through a government-academia partnership and includes an extensive natural in-water laboratory with considerable shore-based infrastructure. Located just south of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in an area with a wide variety of coastal conditions, the site includes nearshore living reefs and the continental shelf break is found only 3 miles from shore. The laboratory incorporates substantial pre-existing in-water instrumentation of the Naval Surface Warfare Center. Miles of cables, sensors and high-speed multiplexers are being supplemented with a large number of additional environmental sensors. When completed, real time environmental data covering the atmosphere through the air/ocean interface and down to the sub-bottom will be available. Sophisticated and extensive acoustic arrays and additional measurement sensors will be strategically located by collaborating institutions, including the University of Miami, National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, and Florida Atlantic University. The measurement area will encompass from the surf zone out to a 400 meter water depth.
