During World War II he served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1942 to 1944 and in the Office of Strategic Services from 1944 to 1945. After the war he attended Franklin Technical Institute, majoring in mechanics, from 1945 to 1947. He worked as a seaman on an ocean-going tug for a year and held other jobs, but he found his calling with welding and metallurgy.
