About the Office

The Office for Applied Oceanography, or OAO, covers intellectual property protection and technology transfer activities at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The office supports scientists, engineers, research staff, and students in the translation of their ideas into useful products and services.  The office is supported by WHOI’s external legal counsel, Goodwin Procter LLC.

The office provides the following services:

  • Patent filing
  • Licensing
  • Legal support
  • Forms and agreements
  • WHOI start up company support and venture capital funding
  • Import/export issues related to technology transfer
  • Identify and coordinate funding sources for WHOI PIs (e.g., SBIR)

WHOI's technology transfer mission is to enable the entrepreneurial spirit of the WHOI Scientific and Technical staff by encouraging effective technology transfer for the public benefit as well as generating income to benefit research and education at WHOI.
